Bitumen is a black or dark-coloured material found as either a solid, semi-solid, viscous form. In addition, the substance is amorphous and cementitious. It can be found in different forms such as rock asphalt, natural bitumen, bitumen which can be extracted from oil (sometimes petroleum bitumen) and tar. Once mixed with sand, gravel and crushed rock, the bitumen/asphalt becomes a liquid binder for UK roads.
The substance is environmentally friendly because it is not burned. Therefore no co2 emissions go into the air. Another positive of Bitumen is that it can be recycled and reused, one of the best ways to be green.
Most refined bitumen is used in the construction industry. Mainly, it serves its use in paving and roofing applications. 85% of all bitumen is used as a binder in asphalt for roads, runways, parking lots, and footpaths.
Our bitumen is extracted from oil, also known as petroleum bitumen and tar.
